More About Esters:

Esters are not new. An ester is just a molecule that has an ester bond in it. But, if you pick the right esters, they can perform some incredible tasks. Consider sunflower oil. This is a natural oil that is made of esters called triglycerides. But, if you change the esters into different esters by combining them with polyglycerin (a bunch of glycerin molecules stuck together), the sunflower oil starts to adopt some really useful properties.

Initially, scientists developed these polyglycerin esters as emulsifiers and surfactants. In short, they suck. Instead of making nice neat emulsions, the polyglycerin esters form these branched globs that are hard to predict and control. So, despite being technically hydrophobic and hydrophilic, meaning they like both water and oil, they actually are really bad at being surfactants.

This can be used to your advantage! When applied to the skin, these beautiful, naturally-derived esters form a unique barrier. They assemble themselves into their microscopic globs and anchor into the skin. This makes them difficult to wash off, meaning you can continue to cleanse the rest of your face without worrying about those pesky dry spots popping up.
